TEFLON

Bio of
TEFLON

The parish of St Mary has always been known within the entertainment circle for the many high calibre entertainers from this parish. From as hardcore as Ninja Man, to as raw as Lady Saw and the ever-blazing Capleton are all sons and daughter of the parish of St Mary. It was no doubt then the trend would continue and a new crop of artiste would follow. TEFLON is the man who in recent times decided not to drop the baton, and since 2003 he has been making his parish and senior colleagues from St Mary proud as well.

Born Shaniel Andre Watson on February 15, 1985 in a Christian home but faith would have it that TEFLON would follow the Rastafarian path. TEFLON lost his mother from an early age and grew up with his grand parents. Life was rough for TEFLON growing up in a small rural district called Jacks River. His grand parents knew there was something special about young Shaniel as he found love in playing the congo drums from age 10. Shortly after he started playing the flute and keyboard as well. At school TEFLON was very attentive in music class and wasted no time showing his classmates his talent. TEFLON started writing songs and soon after started hanging out with local entertainers, and then he found himself at the studio waiting for that big break. After months of hanging out he was blessed with the opportunity to record his first single “Bless me jah” for a small label based in Ocho Rios. The producer didn’t waste anytime promoting the single. It got heavy rotation on the radio. Shortly after TEFLON recorded “Holding on to jah jah love” a song that would have producers searching for the husky toned sounding roots artiste.

TEFLON was young, vibrant, and conscious this was the sound and character that reggae music industry players were seeking but TEFLON had lacked management. Not long after realising TEFLON needed guidance towards stardom a popular disc jock Wayne Morris from Irie Fm assumed the role as him manager. Under Wayne’s guidance TEFLON started recording for some the biggest names in music production including Donovan Bennett, Cordel Burrell, Michael Brissett to name a few. TEFLON was getting love on the radio stations and only needed a number one song to solidify his presence in the music industry. TEFLON compared to Sizzla for his versatility and conscious message, but TEFLON still lacked a face to his melodic sounds on the radio. It wasn’t long before he made his debut on Fully-Loaded 2004 a stage show with a hardcore audience that would boo artiste to show their displeasure for performance that they considered boring. TEFLON made his entry with “Holding on to Jah Jah love” and had the place in frenzy and received two encores. The next day he made headlines in local newspaper and all eyes were on this fast rising conscious crooner. He was booked for every big local show the following year including Reggae Sumfest and Sting. Since making his name TEFLON has headlined a concert in Canada, performed in a few states in America, Caribbean islands such as Antigua, Barbados and Trinidad. TEFLON also achieved another milestone in his career when he performed at Rototom Festival in Italy. TEFLON also scored his first number song and video in 2007 with a song called “Gun Rise” on the “Bullet proof vest riddim”. The video stayed at number for five weeks on the CVM E-strip program and was number simultaneously on RE TV & Hype TV video charts.

TEFLON’s debut album “Motherless Child” was released to e-stores February 2009 on Tad’s International label. The album peaked on #24 on i-tunes top 100 reggae albums which was a milestone in the artiste’s young career. TEFLON enjoyed steady rotation throughout 2009 with radio hits such as Jailhouse Rock and All The Days of my Life (Jah Has Been There) produced by Stephen ‘Di Genius’ McGregor. By the end of TEFLON’s fan base had grown and he was in demand overseas more so in Europe. TEFLON was invited on Sizzla’s Ghetto Youthogoly Tour of Europe. TEFLON opened for Sizzla for more eight weeks to sold-out venues across Europe. They toured places like Holland, Sweden, Belgium, France, Italy, Slovania and Germany.

TEFLON continues to make strides in his career; he just completed his sophomore album to be released by summer 2010. The first single of the album “Fire is burning” will be released by the end of April along with a video. The album is produced by TEFLON’s YARD-A-LOVE label. Legendary producer Fattis Burrell is also producing an album for TEFLON for a release later in the year.
